The Sacraments are not simply milestones to check off — they are encounters with the living God, moments where Christ meets a child in a profound and lasting way. Our Sacramental Preparation program is built around that conviction.
Preparation spans two years and is designed to accompany the whole family, not just the child. Parents are integral to the process — as the primary witnesses of faith in their children's lives, parental participation is not optional background support. It is essential.
Year One: Reconciliation & Salvation History
Sacramental Preparation typically begins in 2nd grade. In Year One, children study Salvation History and prepare for and receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation. Tuition for Year One is $125 per student.
Families in Year One must meet the program requirements listed below.
Register for Year One — opens August 1, 2026
Year Two: Confirmation & First Communion
In Year Two, children prepare to complete the Sacraments of Initiation, receiving Confirmation and First Communion at the same Mass in the spring. During this year, students select a Confirmation saint name and sponsor, complete a Saint Poster Project, and participate in a Student/Family Interview.
Students must have completed Year One to enroll in Year Two. Tuition for Year Two is $125 per student.
Families in Year Two must meet the program requirements listed below.
A Note on Unbaptized Children
Children who have not yet been baptized prepare through the Order of Christian Initiation of Children (OCIC). These children, known as catechumens, receive all three Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist — at the Easter Vigil at the end of their second year in the program.
All three formats follow the same Year One/Year Two structure. Families may transfer between formats between years if needed.
In-Person Classroom Program / Programa En Persona
Year One:
Reconciliation Unit: 8 lessons
Salvation History Unit: 10 lessons
Year Two:

Retreats are typically half-day events held on Saturday mornings. Families in the Home-Based Program may either join the in-person retreats or complete alternative activities as outlined in their curriculum.
El programa incluye tres retiros durante los dos años:Baptized children: a copy of the child’s Baptism Certificate / Niños bautizados: una copia del Acta de Bautizo.
Unbaptized children: a copy of the child’s Birth Certificate / Niños sin bautizar: copia del Acta de Nacimiento.

Video: requisitos para los Padrinos de ConfirmaciónSix First Wednesday Masses are offered each year. Students must attend at least three, accompanied by a family member. These evenings give children — especially those who do not regularly attend Sunday Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary — the opportunity to grow familiar with the church and experience Mass several times before receiving their Sacraments.
This requirement applies to both Year One and Year Two.
Home-Based families fulfill this requirement independently using a Mass Log provided by the program, with a minimum of eight Masses required.
Year One: Parents meet with a Guides group as part of their own formation alongside their child.
Year Two: Parents participate in Parent Encounters, adult formation offerings available through the parish. Parents may choose which offering to attend, and many options are available throughout the year.
Classroom volunteers and trained Guides automatically fulfill this requirement through their program work.
Home-Based families fulfill this requirement by participating in a Discovery Small Group, or through OCIA or Welcome Home. Contact Tyler to learn more.
Students should choose a saint who has been beatified or canonized in the Catholic Church. The Saint Poster Project invites children to learn more deeply about their chosen saint — their life, witness, and relevance to the child's own faith journey — as part of their preparation for Confirmation and First Communion.
The interview is an opportunity to reflect on the journey of the past two years and confirm readiness to receive the Sacraments. A Study Guide is provided at the start of Year Two, and interview questions focus on the program's major learning objectives.
Interviews are conducted with the student's classroom teacher, with parents present.
Home-Based students complete their interview with the program director and their parents.
Immaculate Heart of Mary follows the Restored Order of the Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist — as called for by Archbishop Samuel Aquila in 2015 and implemented across all Archdiocese of Denver parishes by 2020.
In restoring this original order, Archbishop Aquila returned the Sacraments of Initiation to the sequence the Church has celebrated since its earliest days. As a result, children at IHM receive Confirmation and First Communion together at the same Mass at the end of their second year of preparation. Sacramental preparation begins in 2nd grade, with First Reconciliation received at the end of Year One, and Confirmation and Eucharist received at the end of Year Two.
Both programs allow families to complete sacramental preparation at home, but they differ in structure and pace:
At-Home / Online Program Follows the same schedule as the in-person program, typically September through May. Families remain fully integrated with the parish program — attending the same half-day retreats, fulfilling the same First Wednesday Mass requirement, and completing the same adult formation offerings. Lessons are delivered online through the St. Mary's Press curriculum and IHM-created videos, with parents guiding their child through the material.
Home-Based Program Offers maximum flexibility. Families may begin at any point during the year and complete lessons at their own pace. Retreats and program activities are completed independently using guidance provided in the curriculum, students log Masses separately, and parents participate in the Discovery class rather than the full adult formation requirement.
Both programs follow the same Year One/Year Two structure, and families may transfer between programs between years if their needs change.
Children age 7 and older who have not yet been baptized enter the program as OCIC catechumens — participants in the Order of Christian Initiation for Children. Over the course of the two-year program, catechumens prepare for an additional Sacrament: Baptism.
OCIC catechumens attend the same classes as baptized children, but also take part in several additional rites that mark their unique journey:
At the conclusion of Year Two, OCIC catechumens receive all three Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist — at the Easter Vigil, the Saturday night before Easter.
Families transferring from another parish are welcome to contact Kit to discuss whether our program is the right fit. Because our two-year sequence builds on itself, transfer students are reviewed individually to ensure they are well-prepared to receive the Sacraments alongside their classmates.
Students who have already prepared for and received First Reconciliation may be asked to complete an additional online Salvation History course before entering Year Two, depending on their prior formation.
We want every child's sacramental preparation to be meaningful and complete — and that conversation starts with Kit.
