Veni, Creator Spiritus----mentes tuorum visita,
Imple superna gratia---quae tu creasti pectora.
Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,
And in our hearts take up thy rest,
Come with Thy grace and heavenly aid,
To fill the hearts which thou hast made.
This Spiritual life that we are all called to live is important for us as Christians. It is a gift, a grace of our Baptism and Confirmation. Just as the Holy Spirit dwells in the Soul of Christ Himself, so He dwells within us. The third person of the Holy Trinity is the manifestation of the Love of the Father and Son. A love so complete, where the mutual self-giving from all eternity, bears fruit in the Spirit of that love to all of creation. In Light from Light, all things are.
This same Spirit brings us into the supernatural life of God. In our brokenness we find it hard to be fully in union with God, and in fact we are incapable of finding complete union with him until we see Him as He is in the beatific vision of Heaven in all His Glory. But in God’s Grace He has sent His Holy Spirit down upon us that we may have our faith strengthened as long as we cooperate in that Grace through the Sacramental life of the Church.
Our Church was conceived by the very Heart of Christ Crucified when the centurions lance pierced it and the Blood and Water flowed from the side of Jesus. The Divine Mercy. The Church was born in to the world at Pentecost as the Holy Spirit came down upon the disciples and the Gospel proclaimed to the nations. The Gospel is still being proclaimed to this day and will be until the end of time. His Word is the Power of God and all His Authority comes through Christ and His Church through the Spirit.
And the Spirit of God is active in the minds and hearts of believers each and every day. God is omnipresent, always present in the Spirit. The Spirit comes to strengthen our intellect and our will through the supernatural virtues of faith, hope and love. It is through all of our individual and unique gifts that God asks us to participate in building up the Church and to bring lost souls to him that they may be consoled by the same Spirit. The Advocate, the Paraclete, the Counselor, the One whom Jesus promised to send is here today, giving us the gifts and fruits that allow us to be fully human in love.
It is good for us, then, when we struggle and discern in the spiritual life because that gives us hope of advancing towards God in faith and helps us to realize that there are others struggling in their journey as well. So, it is important to continue and always pray the prayer, Veni, Creator Spiritus, asking the Holy Spirit to come into our minds and souls. Include that prayer as you prepare for every Mass.
Also, spend time in reading the Sacred Scriptures as inspired by the Holy Spirit. The words are ever ancient and ever new. Other ways to find depth in your spiritual life is to read spiritual books, written by or about the Saints. Pray in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in Adoration. Pray your Rosary daily and ask for the intercession Mary Most Holy, especially when praying the Glorious Mystery of the Sending of the Holy Spirit. Stay close to Holy Mother Church as she will nurture your faith. Also, pray for the leaders of the Church that they will remain faithful to the Truth of Jesus Christ in the Spirit.
May the Spirit of Christ remain with you today and always.
